Overview

Preventive Health at Wallan Doctors

Many health conditions develop quietly, without obvious symptoms in the early stages. High blood pressure, raised cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and some cancers can often be picked up through simple checks before they cause problems. Preventive health is about finding these changes early and taking steps that suit your life. Your GP can help you understand your own risks, what to check and how often to check it.

At Wallan Doctors, our GPs will look at your age, family history and lifestyle to work out which checks make sense for you, and keep reminders on file so nothing slips through. Medicare-supported health assessments are available for eligible patients at certain life stages. We open in Wallan in April 2027, and preventive care will be part of every relationship we build.

FAQ

Preventive Health: common questions

Straight answers about preventive health at Wallan Doctors.

A health assessment is a structured check of your health and wellbeing. Your GP and practice nurse will ask about your medical and family history, lifestyle and mental health, take measurements such as blood pressure and weight, and may request blood tests. You'll finish with a written plan and recommended next steps.

Medicare-supported health assessments are available for eligible patients at certain life stages, including people aged 45 to 49 with a risk factor for chronic disease, people aged 75 and over, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of any age. Our team can check your eligibility when you book.

There's no single rule, but many adults benefit from a check-up every one to two years, and more often if they have ongoing conditions or risk factors. Your GP will recommend a schedule based on your age, family history and health, and we'll send reminders when checks are due.

Yes. Many sexually transmitted infections don't cause symptoms, so testing is recommended if you have a new partner, more than one partner or any concerns. Testing is confidential and usually involves a urine test, a swab or a blood test. Your GP will explain your results and any treatment.

Australia's National Bowel Cancer Screening Program posts home test kits to eligible people aged 45 to 74 every two years. If you have symptoms such as bleeding or a change in bowel habit, or a strong family history, see your GP rather than waiting for a screening kit.
