Overview

Children's Health at Wallan Doctors

Children get sick, grow quickly and change from one month to the next, so it helps to have a GP who knows them. Our doctors will take time to explain things to parents and to children in words they understand, and to make visits feel as relaxed as possible. Bring a favourite toy, ask every question you have, and let us know if your child is nervous.

Many young families are moving into Wallan and the new estates nearby, including Wallan East and Beveridge. We want parents to have a local practice for the late-night temperature that needs checking the next morning, the four-year-old vaccinations and everything in between. From April 2027, Wallan Doctors will offer children's GP care with the whole family in mind, so siblings and parents can often be seen at the same practice.

FAQ

Children's Health: common questions

Straight answers about children's health at Wallan Doctors.

Our GPs will see children from birth, including newborns, babies, toddlers, school-aged children and teenagers. When we open in April 2027, you'll be able to book baby checks, childhood immunisations and appointments for everyday illness, so the whole family can see doctors at the same local practice.

Yes. We plan to offer childhood immunisations in line with the National Immunisation Program schedule, along with catch-up vaccinations for children who are behind. Every vaccination is recorded on the Australian Immunisation Register, which you can access through your Medicare account for school and childcare.

Yes. Young people can usually see a GP on their own, and their consultation is confidential, with some safety-related exceptions that your GP will explain. Many teens like to start with a parent in the room and then have part of the visit alone. It's a good way to build independence with their health.

Call 000 or go to the nearest emergency department if your child has trouble breathing, is very drowsy or hard to wake, has a seizure, shows signs of dehydration or you're seriously worried. For advice at any time, healthdirect is available on 1800 022 222.

You'll generally need a GP referral to see a paediatrician and receive a Medicare rebate. Your GP can assess your child first, discuss whether a paediatrician is the right next step and write a referral with the relevant history, so the consultant doctor has the information they need.
