Overview

Heart & Lung Health at Wallan Doctors

Heart disease remains one of the most common causes of illness and death in Australia, and lung conditions such as asthma and COPD affect many families. The good news is that many risk factors can be checked simply and managed well with the right support. Knowing your blood pressure, cholesterol and lung function is a great place to start, and your GP can help you understand what the numbers mean.

Our GPs will combine in-clinic tests with practical advice, medication reviews and referrals where appropriate. For people in Wallan, Wandong and Heathcote Junction, it means fewer trips out of town for routine checks once we open in April 2027. Your GP will explain each test and what the results mean for you. In an emergency, such as chest pain or severe shortness of breath, call 000.

FAQ

Heart & Lung Health: common questions

Straight answers about heart & lung health at Wallan Doctors.

A heart health check is a GP appointment that assesses your risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next five years. Your GP reviews your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, smoking, weight and family history, then works with you on a plan. It's recommended for many adults aged 45 and over.

Spirometry is a breathing test that measures how much air you can blow out of your lungs and how fast. It helps diagnose and monitor asthma, COPD and other lung conditions. You'll breathe into a mouthpiece several times, and sometimes repeat the test after using a reliever.

We plan to offer resting ECGs in the clinic when we open in April 2027. An ECG is quick, painless and records your heart's electrical activity. If longer monitoring is needed, such as a 24-hour Holter monitor, your GP can arrange it and explain the results with you.

Call 000 straight away if you have chest pain, pressure or tightness, especially if it spreads to your arm, neck or jaw, or comes with breathlessness, sweating or nausea. Don't wait or drive yourself. Chest pain can be a sign of a heart attack and needs urgent assessment.

Most adults should have their blood pressure checked at least every two years, and more often if it's raised, if you're on treatment or if you have other risk factors. Your GP will recommend how often to check, and may suggest home monitoring for a clearer picture.
