Overview

Pathology Services at Wallan Doctors

Pathology tests help your GP diagnose illness, monitor ongoing conditions and check how treatments are working over time. Common examples include full blood counts, cholesterol and blood sugar tests, iron studies, thyroid tests, urine tests and swabs. Your GP will explain why a test is recommended, what it involves and whether you need to prepare in any way, such as fasting beforehand.

We're planning a pathology collection service on site at Wallan Doctors, so many tests can be done in the same building as your appointment. The collection provider and hours will be confirmed before we open in April 2027, and we'll publish the details here. Results will come back to your GP, who will review them and discuss what they mean with you.

FAQ

Pathology Services: common questions

Straight answers about pathology services at Wallan Doctors.

We're planning a pathology collection service on site so many tests can be collected in the same building as your appointment. The collection provider and hours haven't been confirmed yet. We'll publish the details before we open in April 2027 and let everyone who registers their interest know.

Only some blood tests need fasting, such as certain blood sugar tests. Your GP will tell you if you need to fast and for how long, which is usually 8 to 12 hours with water allowed. If you're unsure, check with the practice before your test.

Results are sent to the GP who requested the test. Your GP will review them and discuss them with you, usually at a follow-up appointment. If a result needs prompt attention, the practice will contact you. It's a good idea to book a follow-up when your tests are requested.

Most pathology tests need a request form from a doctor so the laboratory knows which tests to perform and where to send results. Your GP will provide the request form during your appointment and explain what each test is for.

Once our planned on-site collection service is confirmed, it's expected that many request forms from other doctors can be collected there, depending on the provider. We'll publish details about the provider, accepted request forms and collection hours before we open in April 2027.
